What should I do if the conveyor belt slips?

Admin2026-10-27

Belt slipping is one of the most common faults on conveyor systems. It means the belt runs slower than the driving roller, or even stays still while the roller keeps rotating. If left unaddressed, slipping will cause excessive wear, belt burning, material backlog and unexpected production shutdowns. Let’s walk through the main causes and practical troubleshooting steps.

1.Check the tension of the conveyor belt first

Insufficient tension is the No.1 reason for slipping.

After long-time running, belts will stretch naturally and become loose. For roller-driven flat belts, modular plastic belts and rubber conveyor belts, inadequate tension reduces friction between the belt and driving roller/sprocket.

-For flat PU/PVC belts: Adjust the tensioning screw to tighten the belt properly. Do not over-tighten it, as too much tension speeds up bearing wear and shortens belt service life.

-For modular plastic belting: Its tension is controlled by sprocket position. You need to adjust the take-up unit, instead of pulling the belt extremely tight. Modular belts rely on meshing with sprockets, not pure friction.

2.Confirm overloading or sudden heavy impact

If you put more goods than the conveyor’s rated load, the driving force cannot overcome the load, and slipping happens. Sudden dumping of materials also creates instant impact load.

Solution: Control the feeding volume within the equipment load limit. Add buffer plates for heavy materials to reduce impact.

3.Inspect the driving roller/sprocket surface

-For flat belt conveyors: The driving roller surface may become smooth, covered with water, oil, flour or sticky residue. This lowers friction. Clean oil and dirt on the roller; you can add a rubber lagging on the roller to increase friction if needed.

-For modular plastic belts: Slipping here usually is NOT friction loss. It often means the sprocket teeth are worn, or the belt modules are deformed. Worn teeth cannot engage the belt pins correctly, causing skipping and slipping. Replace worn sprockets in time.

4.Check if the belt is stuck or blocked

Jamming will create extra resistance. Foreign debris, broken parts, misaligned side guards or skewed products can drag the belt.

Turn off power and lock out the machine first. Remove blockages, trim misplaced side guides, and make sure the belt runs straight without rubbing the frame.

5.Check drive system faults

The motor, reducer or chain drive may lose output torque. For example, a worn keyway on the driving shaft, loose coupling or faulty reducer will make the roller rotate weakly. Even if the belt tension is correct, slipping still occurs.

You need professional maintenance to inspect the power transmission components.

6.Environmental factors

Water, cleaning liquid, grease and flour dust on the contact surface greatly reduce friction. This situation is very common in food factories, bakery and seafood workshops.

Keep the drive area dry. Clean residues regularly during CIP washing. Avoid spraying high-pressure water directly on driving rollers and sprockets.

Quick troubleshooting sequence (easy for factory technicians)

  • Stop the machine safely.
  • Check for blockage and extra load.
  • Adjust belt tension moderately.
  • Clean oil, water and dust on driving rollers/sprockets.
  • Check wear of sprocket teeth or belt modules (for modular belts).
  • Inspect motor and reducer if slipping still exists.

Important reminder for modular plastic belts

Many people confuse slipping of flat belts with modular belt skipping.

Modular plastic belting does not work by friction. If it skips over sprockets, simply tightening the belt will not fix it. You must check tooth wear, pin breakage, deformed modules or wrong sprocket pitch.
