What Is The Difference Between Slat Top Chain And Flexible Chain?

Admin2026-10-26

Slat top chain and flexible chain (also known as side-flexing modular belt/flexible modular chain) are two widely used plastic conveying components in food, packaging and poultry processing lines. Although both belong to plastic conveyor chains and run with sprockets, they differ greatly in structural design, running performance, applicable layouts and working scenarios.

1.Structural design

Slat top chain (Tabletop Chain)

It is composed of rigid slat plates connected by hinge pins. Each slat is solid and stiff. The single chain unit cannot bend sideways. It can only run in a straight line or follow gentle vertical up-and-down slopes. The surface is smooth and flat, usually used for stable conveying of boxes, bottles, packaged food. The rigidity of the slat keeps products steady without tilting.

Flexible chain (Side-flexing Modular Chain)

The module structure is specially reserved with side clearance. Its hinge structure allows the belt to bend horizontally, turning left or right along the curve track. The whole chain can follow U-shaped, circular or serpentine production lines. The modules are designed with movable gaps to realize horizontal turning without extra transition equipment.

2.Core running performance

–Slat top chain: Only straight running. High rigidity, good load-bearing capacity, stable platform. It will jam and get damaged forcibly on curved tracks.

–Flexible chain: Supports horizontal side bending. It can go around corners smoothly. But its lateral rigidity is weaker than slat top chain; heavy concentrated loads are not recommended.

3.Surface options

Slat top chain: Mostly solid flat top. Some styles add rubber coating for anti-slip when inclined lifting. It focuses on stable support for rigid packaged goods.

Flexible chain: Available in flush grid, perforated, flat top, cleated types. Grid flexible chains have good drainage and air permeability, which is popular for fresh food, eggs, live poultry and seafood.

4.Typical application scenarios

Slat top chain best for:

Bottle filling lines, carton packaging, canned food, cosmetic box conveying, straight long-distance transfer. Suitable when your workshop has enough space for straight layout and no need to turn horizontally.

Flexible chain best for:

Egg sorting lines, chicken processing, frozen food spiral lines, compact factories that need U-turn to save space. It is exactly the type you saw on the egg transport video, which smoothly turns while carrying fragile eggs without cracking.

5.Material & maintenance

Both are mainly PP and POM food-grade plastic, FDA compliant for food contact.

–Slat top chain: Rigid slats resist impact well. When damaged, replace one slat unit.

–Flexible chain: The hinge part wears faster on curved sections. Regular lubrication and inspection on turning positions are needed. Single damaged module can also be replaced separately, no need to change the whole chain.

Quick summary

Choose slat top chain if you only need straight conveying, high stability for boxes and bottles.

Choose flexible side-flex chain if your production line needs horizontal curves, compact layout, or conveying fragile products like eggs and poultry.
