What Is a Turning Slat Chain Conveyor?

A turning slat chain conveyor, also known as a curved flat-top chain conveyor, is a side-flexible modular conveying system designed to transport products smoothly along curved paths such as 90°, 180°, S-shaped or U-shaped routes. It uses hinged plastic slat chains connected by pins, which can flex sideways to complete directional changes without frequent product transfer stations. Widely adopted in food, beverage and packaging automation, it solves the layout limitation of ordinary straight conveyors in compact workshops.

How It Works

The core component is side-flex slat chain. Each slat unit is linked by stainless steel or plastic pins, and the special hinge structure permits controlled lateral bending when running along curved guide rails.

There are two mainstream types on the market:

1.Standard side-flex slat chain: Relies on hinge bending for turning; suitable for stable, low-to-medium speed conveying.

2.Ball rib (ball turning) slat chain: Equipped with built-in rolling balls. It converts sliding friction between goods and chain surface into rolling friction, greatly reducing extrusion, bottle tipping and surface scratches during cornering, which is preferred for high-speed bottling lines.

Driven by matched sprockets, the whole system runs synchronously. It can connect seamlessly with straight slat chain sections, inclined conveyors and accumulation zones to form a continuous production line.

Multiple engineering plastic material options

Food-grade POM, PP and HDPE are optional. POM offers excellent wear resistance for long-hour high-speed operation; PP tolerates regular CIP cleaning with acid and alkaline sanitizers.

Smooth top surface with low product damage

The flat slat surface supports stable conveying of round bottles, cans, cartons and soft packaging. The ball rib version further minimizes scratching and toppling risks at curves.

Sanitary, washable and low-noise operation

Few dead corners on the chain surface. It supports high-pressure water flushing and chemical disinfection, meeting GMP and food-contact requirements. It runs quietly with low vibration.

Customizable width and turning radius

Different chain widths and curve radii can be selected according to product size and workshop layout.

Selection Notes

• Confirm the turning radius, speed and product weight before ordering. Smaller radius usually needs ball rib slat chain.
• Match the correct sprocket with the same pitch as the slat chain to prevent jumping teeth and jamming.
• For cold or high-temperature workshops, select temperature-resistant material grades. Ordinary PP will turn brittle under freezing conditions.
• Install proper side guides to keep the chain aligned and avoid deviation.
