Guide to Modular Plastic Conveyor Belt Selection

Admin2026-10-29

Modular plastic conveyor belts have become the preferred conveying solution for food, beverage, bakery, packaging, corrugated board and many other continuous-production industries. Compared with traditional rubber belts and metal mesh belts, they feature sprocket-driven positive drive, modular assembly, easy maintenance, washable structure and flexible layout for straight, curved, inclined or accumulated conveying. However, improper selection will lead to frequent jamming, fast wear, product damage and unexpected downtime. This guide walks you through the core selection logic step by step, helping you pick the right belt for your production line.

Step 1: Confirm the product you will convey

The conveyed goods determine the surface type of your modular belt, which is the first decision point.

  • Bottles, cans, packaged boxes, fragile pastry and products that need stable support: choose flat top/solid surface slat chain. The closed surface prevents tipping and scratching, ideal for accumulation conveying.
  • Products requiring air cooling, draining or debris removal: select flush grid/open grid belts with a certain open area, such as our CY-25407W2 radius flush grid belt. It is widely used for corrugated board, seafood washing and post-oven cooling lines.
  • Small granular products or items easy to fall through gaps: pick closed, low-opening or fully solid flat-top designs.
  • Heavy corrugated cartons and bulk packaged goods: use reinforced grid belts with high compressive strength.

Step 2: Define your conveyor layout and movement mode

Check whether your line runs straight only or needs horizontal turns, incline or decline:

  • Straight conveying: Most standard modular belts work well.
  • 90°, 180°compact horizontal turns: You need side-flexing/radius flush grid belts. Ordinary straight belts cannot bend horizontally and will jam or deform on curves.
  • Incline/decline conveying: Anti-slip surface, textured dots or integrated flights are required to stop products from sliding.
  • Narrow transfer points between machines: Choose belts with small pitch for smooth nose-bar transfer without product snagging.

Step 3: Select the belt material according to working environment

Three mainstream materials cover most industrial working conditions:

1.POM(Polyoxymethylene/Acetal)

Outstanding wear resistance, high tensile strength, low friction, suitable for high-speed, heavy-load, dry or medium-temperature lines. Working temperature range: -40℃~85℃. It is the first choice for beverage, packaging and 24-hour continuous running lines.

2.PP(Polypropylene)

Excellent resistance to weak acid, detergent and hot water cleaning. Food-grade PP supports frequent CIP washdown. Working temperature: 0℃~100℃. It is popular in seafood, fruit processing and bakery workshops.

3.PE(Polyethylene)

Good low-temperature performance, suitable for cold storage and frozen food conveying. Working temperature: -40℃~60℃, with relatively lower load capacity.

Special options including antistatic, metal-detectable and flame-retardant grades are available for electronics and high-safety factories.

Step 4:Check core technical parameters

Pitch

Pitch means the distance between two adjacent hinge pins, usually 12.7mm (0.5 inch) or 25.4mm (1 inch). Small pitch suits small products and tight transfers; large pitch delivers higher load capacity for heavy goods.

Open area

Open area percentage decides airflow and drainage. 30%–40%open grid is common for cooling and draining lines; flat top belts have 0%open area.

Load capacity

Confirm the linear load per meter at your working temperature. Higher temperature will reduce the maximum allowable tension of plastic belts. Never overloading for long-time continuous operation.

Belt width

Modular belts are assembled in standard width increments, which can be customized to match your conveyor frame.

Step 5:Match supporting sprockets

Modular plastic belts rely on matched sprockets to transmit power. Mismatched sprocket tooth profile, bore size or tooth number will cause skipping, uneven wear, edge cracking and unstable running.

We recommend ordering belts and dedicated sprockets as one set. Sprockets can be supplied with round bore, square bore, united type or split type for convenient installation and replacement.

Step 6: Hygiene, certification and maintenance requirements

For food, beverage and pharmaceutical lines, confirm the belt meets food contact standards. Modular design allows replacing single broken modules instead of the whole belt, greatly cutting maintenance cost and downtime. Hinge rods should also be matched with correct material (PA,PE etc.) to avoid corrosion.

Common matching recommendations for typical industries

  • Beverage filling & packaging: POM flat top slat chain
  • Bakery cooling & finished pastry transfer: Flat top or ball transfer slat chain for fragile products
  • Corrugated cardboard factory: Radius flush grid modular belt (such as CY-25407W2)
  • Seafood, fruit and vegetable washing line: PP open grid belt
  • Frozen food processing: Low-temperature PE modular belt
